My Story
I am Mark Rutherford McPherson, a jade carver based in Motueka, Tasman, Aotearoa. I work primarily with Pounamu, much of which I gather myself from northern rivers in the South Island. Each stone has its own wairua, and carving is my way of listening, learning, and helping that spirit come through. Being first contact with a stone comes with a responsibility to honour it.
I’ve been working with stone for over 20 years, drawn to its weight, presence, and the quiet stories it holds. In 2024, I committed fully to carving as my main focus after many years in painting and decorating — stepping fully into what has long felt like a deeper calling.
My process is slow, intuitive, and guided by feel rather than formula. My mantra is to not impose my will upon the stone. To go with it, not at it.
In June 2024, I exhibited my work internationally for the first time at the Gorg Schmergolz Jade Carving Exhibition in Monterey, California, where I was honoured to receive a silver award. That experience deepened my sense of purpose — both as an artist and as someone carrying stories from this whenua through stone.
Each piece I make is shaped with care and presence. These taonga are made to be worn, held, and lived with — carrying the energy of Te Wai Pounamu, the pure stream
